John Scott is the 2nd Vice President and Service Officer of the Prince George Royal Canadian Legion Branch 43. Originally hailing from Calgary, John has been an active resident of Prince George since 1977. He and his spouse, Wilma, have two sons, Steven and Glen. John is a veteran NATO Peacekeeper who now spends his time serving other veterans. He particularly enjoys helping veterans with their Veterans Affairs Canada claims and providing programs funded through the annual poppy donations given generously by local residents.
Royal Canadian Legion #43 is located at 1335 7th Avenue. The facilities include the Legion Hall and auditorium along with a kitchen and bar used for community social gatherings. The legion’s mission is to serve veterans and their dependants, promote remembrance, and act in the service of Canada and its communities. Anyone is welcome to volunteer or become a member. Membership is $42.50. Prospective members are welcome at the legion or can call 250-562-1292 for more information. There is always a need for more volunteers to assist with the legion’s community projects and events.
John and his legion colleagues are currently busy planning a Red Shirt Marathon to be held Saturday June 26 in Fort George Park. It will involve a five-kilometer walk, run, or push with proceeds going to Winch House in Vancouver. This facility provides a place to stay for veterans attending the Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Clinic. The clinic is legion-sponsored and has become a very important resource for veterans, from World War II to Afghanistan. John is also working to increase awareness of changes made to the Veterans Affairs Canada services in order to ensure veterans are not missing out on valuable services. John offers confidential assistance for any veteran that requires help maneuvering through federal processes to access veteran benefits and programs.
