Barbara Conway has been an active resident in the local community for the past 43 years. Born and raised in the Yukon, Barbara moved “south” to Prince George in 1967. Since that time, she married and raised a daughter with special needs. Today, Barbara is the Volunteer Coordinator for the Prince George Chapter of Special Olympics British Columbia. Barbara cherishes every aspect of her involvement with the Special Olympics. She particularly enjoys working with the athletes, including her own daughter.
Special Olympics BC Prince George, is a non-profit, volunteer-driven program designed to promote athletic sport training and the competitive experience specifically for individuals challenged by mental disabilities. Barbara reminds people that just because someone has a learning disability, it should not be a barrier to physical athletic opportunities. She points out that participants get to enjoy great camaraderie, group travel experiences, increased confidence, and personal development.
Barbara stresses that working with Special Olympians is a very rewarding experience and invites people to get involved by contacting her at 250-563-5756. They can also contact area coordinator Lisa Collver at 250-962-8976.
Barbara is currently organizing winter sports preparations for cross country skiing, snowshoeing and curling competitions to qualify for the Provincial Games in 2011. She is also proud of two local athletes, Darcy Muzychka and Molly Thomas, who are going to compete in Rhythmic Gymnastics at the National Summer Games in London, Ontario, this upcoming July. And, she is cheering on Yvonne LeRuyet and Jordon Korum who are also going to the Summer Games to compete in Five-Pin Bowling. The organization is also putting together a website to enhance communications with the general public. They hope to have the new website up and running this year.
