Allison Parker is the project leader for the Katimavik Program. Allison was born and raised in Prince George and has lived here most of her life.
She had experienced the Katimavik Program as an outsider during its Prince George project several years ago and the organization left a strong, positive impression on her. After graduating from the University of Northern B.C. earlier this year, Allison found this program gave her an opportunity to learn and to utilize her skills in project management and leadership. She found in Katimavik, an atmosphere of shared learning experiences for its staff and its participants.
Katimavik is a national volunteer service organization that empowers youth to make a significant contribution in local communities and participate in nation-building while fostering their personal and professional development through a challenging youth-volunteer, leadership and service-learning program.
The Program’s objectives include: to contribute substantially to the personal, social and professional development of its participants; to promote community service; and to offer a diverse experience to foster a better understanding of Canadian life.
The organization’s office is located near 1st Avenue and Tabor Boulevard. Please contact them at 250-564-5804 for further information.
The Katimavik’s 2008/2009 Program offers youth between the ages of 17 and 21 an exciting nine-month journey of discovery through “service learning”, a combination of personal and professional development through volunteer work and group life. At the end of the program, each participant will have contributed an average of 900 hours of volunteer work – 35 hours a week – for non-profit organizations. Since 1977, more than 30,000 young Canadians have participated in the Katimavik program. The organization is still taking applications for the 2008/2009 program, departure date December 1st.
You can get involved with the Katimavik Program by calling 250-564-5804, email princegeorge@katimavik-bcyk.org or visiting their website at www.katimavik.org.
