" The Museum Protects Our Past to Enhance Our Future"

Tom Dielisson

Tom Dielisson is the President of The Exploration Place at the Fraser-Fort George Regional Museum. Tom was born in Calgary, Alberta and raised in Vancouver but has made Prince George his home for the past 36 years. He is married to Robin Dielisson.

Tom works with The Exploration Place because it appeals to everyone in the community including preschoolers, families, tourists, researchers, historians and seniors. He is also pleased that The Exploration Place has moved towards a more interactive approach by moving from ‘exhibits sitting on the shelves’ to ‘living, interactive exhibits.'

The Exploration Place – a Science Centre and Museum was transformed and established, following a major 2001 expansion and re-branding of the museum which resulted in the exciting facility it is today.

The museum has progressed from a purely heritage function to an organization encompassing science and community involvement. Through the use of both historical and scientific content, the programs and activities developed over the past ten years have balanced the curatorial and entertainment aspects of the exhibits. The local community and visitors have responded very positively to the creative and innovative changes which have been made. The museum has enjoyed an increase in memberships and event participation as exhibit experiences grow every year.

The museum is located at 333 Becott Place, Prince George. Please contact them at 250-562-1612 for further information.

The Exploration Place provides multiple programs, including After School Fort George Explorers Program, Museum Munchkins, Home Schooler Mondays, Youth Days, On-Site School Programs, School Outreach Program and the Youth Curator Program.

Coming up in August is the Flying Squirrel Presentation, a fun filled informative session about the nocturnal forest dwellers. Included in the 1 ½ hour show are skits, guessing games, handouts for the kids and of course appearances by Sabrina and Scooter. Also in August is the Rivermania Launch where, with free admission, you can visit the “On the Map” exhibit that tells the story of the history of our region and B.C. through historic maps and cartography implements.

You can get involved with the society by calling the museum manager or visiting their website at www.theexplorationplace.com. There are many ways to help out, such as participating on committees or with fundraising events, providing clerical support and helping to coordinate events. The organization also accepts and preserves unique family treasures donated to the museum that depict early pioneer activities in our region.
