Glenda Brommeland is the coordinator for the Prince George Council of Seniors’ Meals on Wheels Program. Glenda was born in North Vancouver and raised in Princeton, but has made Prince George her home for the last 50 years. She has two sons, Lance and Bill, who have given her two grandchildren.
Glenda joined the Meals on Wheels program as a retiree and as an extension of her many years experience as a volunteer caterer. She was excited about revitalizing the program and, after agreeing upon a change of direction, manages the project for the Council of Seniors. Glenda also enjoys volunteering with Community Policing and the Ladies Eagles.
Created in 1990, the Prince George Council of Seniors has grown to be a strong part of the community. The focus of the organization is to help seniors and volunteers work together to support and enhance the quality of life for all seniors in Prince George. The council is an umbrella organization servicing 15 local Seniors Centres.
The organization’s offices are located at 1055 5th Avenue and are open 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday to Friday.
The Meals on Wheels Program provides nutritious meals to shut-ins, seniors and to people that are unable to cook for themselves, such as people just released from hospital, in the bowl area of Prince George. The Council of Seniors is planning on extending the service region in the near future.
The meals are prepared at the Smoke House Kitchen, which is a training kitchen at the Native Friendship Centre. This provides the added benefit of giving the students the opportunity to learn different meal plans because some of the seniors require specific meals due to health conditions. On statutory holidays, the meals are provided by a local restaurant and delivered by local Rotary club volunteers to the clients that are around during the holidays.
The agency is looking for volunteers, so for more information or to get involved, call (250) 564-5888 or visit the Council of Seniors’ website at www.pgcos.ca.
