“Nobody grows up wanting to be a prostitute. The sooner we understand and accept that these women and girls are mothers, daughters and sisters, the sooner we can support them in making healthier choices in their lives.”

Christal Capostinsky is the founder and Executive Director of the Prince George New Hope Society. Born in Edmonton, Christal has spent most of her life in Prince George. She is a single parent with one seven-year old son, Gabriel. After spending seven years on the streets of Vancouver addicted to drugs and involved in the sex trade, Christal returned to Prince George and volunteered at Positive Living North.

She became involved in the BC Coalition of Experiential Communities and her experiences with this group led her to start up New Hope. Christal says the North needed an organization for sex workers and sexually exploited youth that could provide necessary services. She likes to share her story of hope with other women and girls and relate to them on a level that most service providers cannot.

New Hope strives to bridge the gap in services that are available for sex workers by creating a place of safety and security for women to access the support services that they require. The New Hope Society aims to build relationships with the women and help them get into a position where exiting is a viable option. Many of the people Christal and the New Hope Society work with have had very traumatic experiences, and they need to feel cared for in order to believe they can have a healthier future.

On Sunday nights the New Hope Society hosts a drop-in where women can get something to eat, support services, supplies, sleep for a few hours or watch a movie. Christal hopes the organization can provide more services in the future. They are located at 1046-4th Avenue.

The Society’s next Annual General Meeting is in February. They are looking for people who are interested in joining the Board of Directors. Any interested parties, particularly those with a specific skill such as bookkeeping, proposal writing, capacity building, etc., can contact Christal at newhopesociety@telus.net.
