Operation Red Nose

Lloyd Clay is a member of the Rotary Club of Prince George Nechako.  He is also the Sponsorship Chairman of the Rotary Club’s ongoing project, Operation Red Nose.  Born and raised in Flin Flon, Manitoba, Lloyd has lived in Prince George for more than 30 years.  Lloyd and his wife have four children, eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

He was motivated to join Operation Red Nose (ORN) because the program helps to reduce car accidents, injuries and fatalities and all the stress these events can bring to a family during the Christmas season.

The mission of Operation Red Nose is to reduce accidents and injuries during the most vulnerable time of the year.  The Rotary Club’s overall mission is to support local projects.  Over the years the organization has contributed to projects such as youth soccer fields, the skate board park, Cottonwood Island, the Railway Museum, paediatrics ward, swim clubs and dozens of others.  ORN operates out of the ICBC building on 15th Avenue.

Operation Red Nose (ORN) has several three-person teams available to provide a safe ride to the car owner and their passengers when they do not feel it would be safe to drive themselves.  In addition to driving people home, ORN also drives the person’s vehicle back to their destination.  The service is provided: November 30, December 1, 7, 8, 14, 15, 21, 22 and 31.  These dates were selected because they are dates taxis are typically too busy to handle all the needs in the community.

Lloyd would like to highlight that ORN depends on a team of volunteers, special partnerships and sponsors.  Volunteers are essential to Operation Red Nose and more than 3,000 volunteer hours were contributed last year.  People can get involved as drivers for the escort or client’s car, or as navigators.  There is also a great need for volunteers to answer the phones.  Anyone interested in volunteering must have an RCMP security check completed.  To receive more information about volunteering, contact Heather Spicer at 613-6947 or 964-0279.  Anyone wishing to donate or become a sponsor can reach Lloyd at 562-7668.
