Matt Bennett and Leland Ash are the co-chairs of the H.E.A.R.T.S (Honouring Experience And Recognizing Today’s Seniors) eighth annual Christmas Dinner (and the third Matt and Leland have worked on). Both young men were born and raised in Prince George.
Matt became involved with the dinner through his older brother, Tim, who is the founder of the dinner. Leland was asked to volunteer by Matt and enjoys all aspects of organizing the event.
The H.E.A.R.T.S Christmas Dinner was created when Tim Bennett (Matt’s older brother) asked their grandmother where she planned to go after hearing about the different events that occur for seniors around Christmas. She explained to Tim that most of the special events are for seniors currently living in care homes, which Tim did not feel was fair to those who live in their own home. So he decided to initiate an event specifically for those seniors.
The event takes place at the St. Giles Presbyterian Church at 1500 Edmonton Street. Pre-registration is required due to seating capacity limitations.
The dinner is completely complimentary and transportation is provided for those who need it. It is open to anyone 55 years of age or older who live independently. The dinner includes a traditional four-course Christmas dinner and entertainment. Each guest is given a personalized card, a fully stuffed stocking and a door prize.
The organizers need at least six more table sponsors to make sure the dinner is possible. Donations need to be secured by the third week of November. Those who are interested in sponsoring a table can receive more information by contacting co-coordinator Laura Bennett at 564-2898.
