Born and raised in Prince George, Donna Jarvis is a true home-grown person who is working hard to make a difference in the only community she’s called home. Her parents were also born and raised in PG! Donna is the Manager of the Learning Difficulties Centre (LDC) in Prince George.
Married with two adult children – a son and a daughter – Donna first began with the LDC as a volunteer. She began working for the LDC in February 2001 and has remained there for the most part since. Her son received math and English tutoring through the LDC, which she says helped her to experience the difference support can make to the student, family and home environment.
Her favourite aspect of working at the LDC is seeing the difference in the children who receive tutoring. She says they often arrive reluctant to be there for the first session, but quickly want to stay longer and come more frequently as they feel good about themselves and become more confident about what they are learning.
The mission of the Learning Difficulties Centre of BC is to provide comprehensive services in an emotionally supportive environment to children and adults affected by learning difficulties.
Located on the top floor of Sacred Heart School at 785 Patricia Boulevard, the LDC provides one-to-one tutoring services. They offer training in the Orton-Gillingham based approach to teaching language and Multisensory Math to teach math.
They also offer a variety of workshops throughout the year to support parents, tutors and educators in the community.
This year is the LDC’s 20th anniversary and they are holding a celebration to recognize those who have contributed to the growth of the organization. Donna invites anyone who would like to join them for dinner on October 20th at the Ramada Inn to call her at 564-8011.
The LDB believes cost should never be a barrier to learning, which is why they have created the “Partners in Learning Program” to provide financial assistance to those who would not otherwise have access to their services. Each year they raise funds for this program and donations are always welcome.
