Barbara Parker is the General Manager for the Prince George Symphony Orchestra (PGSO). Born and raised in Manitoba, Barbara has lived in Prince George since 2001. She is very interested in music education and fostering excellence in music in the region.
Barbara studied pipe organ and voice performance at the University of Wisconsin and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Technology from the University of Colorado. She has directed the Prince George Cantata Singers since 2001.
The PGSO is a producer of 12-14 high-quality symphonic music concerts per season with a core of talented and dedicated professional musicians. It is currently the only professional or semi-professional orchestra in northern British Columbia. The PGSO has been serving Prince George and area for over 35 years.
Located at 2880 15th Avenue, the PGSO aims to explore great works of music and present the finest soloists that will take you on a musical journey you will not soon forget. In addition to performing concerts, the PGSO supports youth and education in the community through in-school performances aimed at getting kids excited about music. The symphony also has a mentoring program to support amateur musicians in the community.
The 4th annual “Pops in the Park” will take place Sunday, September 9 starting at 2pm in Fort George Park. The celebration is a free family day of fun and music including pops, light classics and TV and film soundtrack excerpts.
The launch of the concert series will be on Saturday, September 29 at Vanier Hall with “The Final Frontier.” The concert features cellist Jeremy Findlay performing the Elgar Cello Concerto plus a performance of Hoist and Solaris’ The Planets by Canadian composer Estacio. The Prince George Centre Royal Astronomical Society will provide visual effects depicting the sun and planets.
