Anne Martin is the chair of the Prince George Communities in Bloom Committee (CIB). Born in London, England and raised in Cornwall, England, she immigrated to Canada in 1958 and has lived in Prince George since 1965. Anne and her husband Robert have two sons who both live in Prince George with their families.
Her favourite aspect of serving as the chair of the committee is working with a team of people who share her passion for gardening and Prince George.
The CIB is based out of City Hall with administrative support provided by Leisure Services. Communities in Bloom is a non-profit organization committed to fostering civic pride, environmental responsibility and beautification through community participation by encouraging some friendly cross-municipality competition.
Trained volunteer judges evaluate communities with similar populations against eight criteria including: community involvement, heritage conservation, landscaped areas, floral arrangement, urban forestry, turf and ground cover, tidiness and environmental effort.
Competitions are organized at provincial, national and international levels. The local committee entered at the provincial level in 2003, winning the category in 2004. Prince George won at the national level in 2006 and plans to compete in the international category in 2008.
Communities in Bloom is currently receiving applications for the Community Enhancement Grant program, which forms partnerships with individuals and groups and encourages the beautification of the city in a variety of ways. The deadline for applications is June 7.
They have also launched the GreenWorks project in partnership with Volunteer Prince George asking volunteers to donate time to work in the gardens of local agencies.
On Saturday, July 21, CIB is holding their annual “Walk in the Garden” in Fort George Park. There will be displays, workshops and the presentation of awards for the David Douglas Botanical Garden Society contest.
Communities in Bloom will also have a display booth at PGX in August. If you would like more information about any of their ongoing projects, you can reach them by phone at (250) 561-7640 or online by visiting
