"The PG Citizen Iceman is all about participation and community. The people have made the event a fantastic success."
- John Bass

John Bass was the fundraising and sponsorship coordinator for the 2007 Prince George Citizen Iceman Challenge.  John competed and volunteered for the Iceman in the past and always believed that it is a great community event that encourages people to stay active throughout the winter.

The Iceman started in 1988 as a result of the Calgary Winter Olympics Torch Relay that passed through Prince George.  It remains a legacy of those Games and a tribute to the athletic spirit of all the people who stay active all winter long.

The annual individual or team race involves cross-country skiing, running, skating and swimming and averages more than 600 participants and a crowd of 1,100 at the awards banquet held at the Civic Centre.  Teams are encouraged to participate using humourous names and, most importantly, everybody is encouraged to have fun.

The 20th Iceman took place this year on February 11, 2007.  The Stride and Glide Sports team won the competition with an overall time of 1:40:33.

John would like local businesses to begin to think about supporting the 2008 Iceman as letters requesting consideration could be sent out as early as September!  It is a tremendous community event and the organizing committee will work with sponsors to increase awareness for the competition.

John would also like to thank the City of Prince George and all the people who have participated over the past 20 years to make the PG Citizen Iceman such a great and unique event.  Why not plan to put together a team of your own and participate in the next Iceman Challenge!
