From a young age, Melissa Bodo has been immersed in the French language. She grew up in Prince George attending French-immersion schools, including graduating from the Duchess Park Secondary French program. She’s currently attending university in Montreal.
This summer, as camp co-ordinator for the French-language Discover Your World Camps, Melissa is passing her love of the French language on to a new generation.
As camp co-ordinator, Melissa can combine her passion for French with gaining experience that will ultimately help her achieve her Bachelor’s of Education at McGill University.

The goal of the Discover Your World camp is for children to have fun, meet new friends, make new discoveries, all while maintaining and enhancing their French-language skills.
For parents of French immersion children, the camps are a perfect way to keep their kids practicing French throughout the summer months. Participants range from 6-12 years old and the weekly camps feature a variety of themes including everything from art and acience to sports and theatre.
The camp organizers work with the community to provide organized activities throughout the city that help participants gain a new appreciation for both of Canada’s official languages.
The Energy Camp for 10-12 year olds is a new initiative this year to get older children involved in the French Community Centre. The week-long camp runs from August 8 to 11 and includes fun activities and a camping trip.
On August 18, at the end of the camp’s theatre week, they will be hosting a small production by the children at the Prince George Playhouse at 3:30 p.m.
Volunteers and sponsors play a huge role in the Discover Your World Camps. Last year, 26 volunteers helped throughout the eight weeks of camps and at least a dozen local organizations such as the City of Prince George, Canfor, the Civic Centre, UNBC and Huble Farm participated. More volunteers and sponsors are always welcome.
