"Forest awareness through forest education."
- Alison Duperronn |
Alison Duperron has deep roots in Prince George’s forestry community. The mother of two was born and raised in Prince George, and her father worked his entire career as a forest engineer after coming to the city in 1954.
He instilled in Alison a love of the forest and the value that it holds for the community and the province, which she carried forward in her job as an instructor of a renewable resource program at the College of New Caledonia.
Since becoming the chair of Canadian Women in Timber (CWIT), Alison has made it her mission to tell people about the forest industry and its role as B.C.’s number one resource and economic driver.
Formed in 1989, Canadian Women in Timber is an organization dedicated to informing the public about our forests and forest industry by promoting forest awareness through education.
CWIT works together with industry organizations and forest companies to focus on public education through schools and community organizations, with the goal of encouraging sound management and wise use of Canada’s forest resource for the benefit of everyone.
Branches of CWIT are located throughout British Columbia, each carrying out the organization’s mandate in a variety of different ways.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Canadian Women in Timber’s Sharing our Forests education program in Prince George schools.
The program offers five lessons to Kindergarten to Grade 3 classes in Prince George, Quesnel and Fort St. James. The five lessons include Forest Users, Forest Management, Life Cycle of a Tree, Harvesting and Products & Byproducts. Each lesson is delivered in a hands-on manner with props that bring the lessons to life. The program is very popular and is typically booked full from school year to school year.
In September, CWIT will hold their 17th annual general meeting in the Okanagan. Full details will be available soon on the CWIT web site.
Canadian Women in Timber is always looking for new members, including speakers for their monthly meetings. Anyone interested in participating can contact the CWIT through their web site.
