"Connections Clubhouse is about members supporting members, and is a place where all members are accepted and welcomed without stigma."
- Linda Doran

For decades, Linda Doran has been working to help create a better life for people with a mental illness.

Twenty-five years ago she was working in Prince George Regional Hospital’s psychiatric unit when she was hired by the Canadian Mental Health Association to help develop services for those with a serious and persistent mental illness in an achievement centre-style setting. That project grew into the Connections Clubhouse.

As executive director of the PG branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association, Linda is passionate about advocating for the people who use the Clubhouse’s services and about providing an accepting atmosphere where they can learn skills towards building a more independent life for themselves.

The Connections Clubhouse – formerly the Mary Harper Achievement Centre – is an important part of the lives of over 100 members with a serious or persistent mental illness who use the services provided there.

The Clubhouse is a place for individuals to develop skills for independence while at the same time building self-esteem and self-confidence. Clients not only access services, they take an active role in the operation of the Clubhouse, learning leadership, responsibility and governance skills.

Located in a residential setting on Norwood Street in Prince George and open Monday through Friday, the Clubhouse group prepares lunches three times a week, provide supported work opportunities and organize other social and recreation opportunities.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Connections Clubhouse and Linda and the rest of the Connections members are hoping the community will help them mark this important milestone through volunteering or donations.

For more information on becoming a volunteer or donating, call or drop into the CMHA office at 555 George Street in Prince George, (250) 564-8644, or visit the CMHA’s Prince George Branch Web site at www.cmhapg.ca.
