"We aim to develop a unique program for the benefit of seniors."

- Rudy Wortman

Rudy Wortman was born in Brazil and raised in Germany, but for the last 41 years he has called the northern B.C. community of Prince George his home.

And with roots that deep in this community, it’s no surprise that Rudy has become involved with a community organization like the North Central Seniors Centre – a group based on friendship, fellowship and staying active and vibrant in the golden years.

As president of the centre, Rudy has the opportunity to not only enjoy the services and activities provided, but also to help create the unique programs that members participate in.

The North Central Seniors Centre has its roots in a 12-member group of Canadian Legion members who set out in 1980 to establish a place for activities tailored to seniors.

Since then, the NCSC has grown to include the Prince George Stroke Recovery Club, the Community Special Needs Recreation Club, and a membership numbering in the hundreds.

The NCSC were also one of the original groups to support the founding of the Prince George Council of Seniors; they give out bursaries to local post-secondary students; host bake sales, picnics and trips; and support a range of local programs aimed at improving the lives of seniors in the Prince George region.

The North Central Seniors Centre also recently opened their doors at a new location at 7005 Gladstone Drive in College Heights, Prince George.

The mission of the North Central Seniors Centre is to establish, maintain and operate a centre designed to give seniors an opportunity to share interests, skills and talents.

That covers a huge range of initiatives, including: daily hot lunches, carpet bowling, crib, photo club, darts, pool, cards, crafts, tai chi, armchair exercises and old-time square dancing, to name a few.

Upcoming events include the regular birthday celebration every second Friday of the month, a bus trip to Quesnel later this month and the upcoming carpet bowling provincial championships in Delta.

Both volunteers and new members are always welcome. For more information, email ncsapg@shaw.ca or visit the North Central Seniors’ Web site at www.pgcos.ca.
